Before we get on to the critiquing I have a few things to cover regarding my characterization of America which you might want to take note of!

  1.  It is not my intention for America to be a history book when I play him, even if he is from World War II. Generally speaking, I am going to go by rule of funny. Because, in canon, that's what Himaruya does.

  2. Furthermore, I will be avoiding b'awww (though completely justified b'awww) regarding the Japanese and America in WWII. America will regard Japan as an enemy, but it will be presented in traditional, silly, Hetalia fashion.

If either of these things bother you (and these things alone), you have a problem with Hetalia, not my characterization, and I can't help you. Otherwise, fire away! (ip logging is off, and anon is on!)

GENDER:
Male, physically and mentally.

APPEARANCE:
America is blond, blue-eyed, with the appearance of a 19 year old. He wears glasses (Texas) and has a cowlick at the part of his hair (Nantucket). He's taller, clocking in at 177 cm (5'9.6" ft) and heavier because of muscle. (He started working out when he realized he was getting heavy, but muscle made him weigh more, so he worked even harder and got even more muscle). [link 1] [link 2] [link 3]

PERSONALITY & HOUSE REQUESTS:

America is a very cheerful, energetic sort of guy. At surface level, he seems very child-like. He reacts to things in the extreme when he doesn’t like them, crying and yelling if they make him unhappy. He’s afraid of ghosts and horror movies but he always wants to watch them and insists on sleeping together whenever he’s seen something scary. (In fact, he seems perfectly okay with sleeping together with people all the time, if he weren’t America you’d almost suspect something.)

When things make him happy, he is just as extreme. He’s not unknown to jump up and down in place (or whatever that weird dance was) and cheer. He’s even broken his leg getting excited over ice cream. When he talks to Japan about ending his isolation, it’s revealed that America is the type of person who believes that the world is a great place and it’s easy to make friends (despite himself not having many of them). He believes in this so much, that when he thought his boss told him to make friends with the whales, he believed him and attempted to do just that. And succeeded.

Also like a child, America is immature. He tends to fight with his close friends, teasing them and making fun of them at almost every available opportunity (messing with England constantly, although it's mutual, and teasing Canada often as well). He can be petty, switching from coffee to tea because of the Revolution and messing up Mexico on his hand drawn map because of a grudge over the Alamo. He tries to pick at other people through condom-sizes and painting their national monuments a different color, and he's weirdly competitive with England. It's also said that he intentionally doesn't read the atmosphere.

However, America’s motivations are based on high hopes. He wants a happy ending for him and those closest to him. The idea of being the hero is also really appealing to him. Even as a child, he held the empathy that showed that in the future he would want to help people. When England was sad, America chose him over France, who was smiling and had good food.  He was dependent on England, but as he grew stronger, that blew away and his desire to be independent manifested itself.

When one goes deeper into America’s character, the parts that are less childish present themselves. America has shown that he is willing to work very hard to achieve what he wants. Belarus, Russia’s sister, has commented once that America was probably tiring himself out getting ready for Christmas. Taking this, it’s very possible that America puts this sort of effort into a lot of things.  When America hosted several parties, they were often with lots of people, the Halloween party had a gigantic stage, his Christmas party had a gigantic blue cake, and at his birthday party, he received a car and had posters up. Not only is this in parties, but he tends to over-produce things. He had so much supplies and ate a really good amount of food during WWII thanks to just having so much.

But showing motivation and bravery deeper than that is America’s revolution. As a child, America was very close to England, he cried at the thought of England leaving him alone. During his revolution, he not only had to leave England, but had to make him leave as well as disown him as his brother.

Afterwards, America was also shown telling Japan that he would make friends Pre WWII. The casualness with which he comes to show Japan turntables and the openness with which the reserved Japan asks him such a question seems to imply that America might have been trying to introduce Japan back into the world and set him at ease. Knowing this it might be fair to say that America knew Japan pretty well. Later on, obviously they went to war. Very apparently, America will stand his ground against those he thinks are wrong, even if they were close at one point.

America can also sometimes be in possession of a striking amount of maturity when the situation calls for it. He apologizes for the Great Depression affecting other countries, taking the censure he gets in response, if he were immature there are many other actions he could have taken, but he takes responsibility. He also allows Russia to take Lithuania, who had been previously staying at his house, away from him without fighting. He could have fought Russia, or even called Russia names, but all he asks is for Russia to take care of Lithuania. And without messing with Russia, he thanks Lithuania for all he’s done and asks him to come by and hang out with him again once the Depression is over and done with.

Even further, when remembering his Revolution, America doesn’t just remember his fighting with England, but also the good times with England. His view of it isn’t closed minded or angry, but tinged with sadness, so much so that he can never clean out his closet full of old things from that time. When he tells Lithuania about this, calling himself an old man, Lithuania remarks that America’s grown up.

With these things in mind, the two houses in mind are Gryffindor as the first choice and Slytherin as the second.

For Gryffindor, I feel that America is extremely brave. He has demonstrated it in going against his future friends (England and Japan) in the past, going before his equals to be taken down a notch, and just his general face-first approach to life, where he ends up getting his ass kicked at times because he's so foolhardy. His desire to be the hero also plays into being a Gryffindor, wanting to help people and keep them safe is a very chivalrous idea (even if he approaches it in the vainest way possible).

For Slytherin, America has a lot of ambition. He constantly pushes the hero agenda, and will go to almost any means to break down an opponent on the battlefield. He's been cunning before as well, offering England food and when England accepted, asking, "So what do I get in return?" He can trick people, as he did with Japan and the turntables, and he doesn't shy away from it. However, despite this great amount of ambition, America is very foolhardy and seems to lack the self-preservation instinct so prevalent in Slytherin, making Gryffindor a better fit.

COMMUTER DETAILS: Untapped.
POSITION: Student!
ABILITIES & POWERS: America is very strong. Since he was a child he could swing a buffalo around himself by its legs. As he gotten older, he’s capable of pulling a Jeep around for an hour without breaking a sweat. It’s also been said that he can “stop a car with the heel of his foot.” He's also shown doing a series of backflips, boxing, and shown to fly planes, for these reasons I think America would be very good at Quidditch.

As for subjects, I think he would be fascinated by Astronomy (being a big believer in alien life and knowing about the space race that would come later in his future). I also think he would be interested in Defense against the Dark Arts (considering the time period he is from and his preoccupation with being the hero). There is a high chance he would be good at Care of Magical Creatures, considering the large amount of animal friends he has, including rabbits, buffalo and a whale. I think he might also be relatively good at charms because of the creativity it allows, and the immediate effects of it which would be highly entertaining to him.

I think he would not be so good at anything particularly complex. Meaning I don't expect him to be very good at Arithmancy or Transfiguration. Potions I feel he would try to change the recipe or be lazy about following instructions on it, such as just sort of "guessing" how much needs to go in or turning it the wrong direction or just adding something that doesn't go in there. Magic History I feel he would pay very little attention to, most likely just drawing pictures or sleeping through the class, unless there's some sort of figure he thinks of as being heroic, in which case he would pay attention just for that part and probably over-simplify everything. I think he would be terrible at Divination, like most people, being too preoccupied with loud noises and funny smells to really be interested. Herbology I don't expect him to be very good at either, dust bowl anyone?

WAND: Chestnut, unicorn hair, 11 inches, springy. Chestnut is attracted to those skilled with taming magical beasts and natural at flying (both of which I believe will be America's strengths). And when combined with Unicorn hair, it makes for someone who is preoccupied with justice, which it has been canon-ly remarked that he is. 11 inches seems reasonable, he is a person with a big personality, but I don't expect him to be the most powerful wizard, nor is he particularly tall so in need of a bigger wand. Springy because it calls to mind a person with a spring in their step, something that bounces back, and I see him doing that very easily.

MISC.:Work takes up a lot of time on the weekend and I'm sort of a slow writer, so revisions might be a little late. I will try my best to get any before 72 hours, however.

WRITING SAMPLES

FIRST PERSON:

[America's face takes up most of the screen for a minute (looking like some behemoth straight from hamburger hell)]  Huh! Why can't I get this to work, I was sure if I just-Ah! There it goes! [before he pulls back with a smile]

Hello~ everyone! America here!  [the wind is blowing his hair into his face and he may or may not have bugs in his teeth, but it was worth it, so worth it.] And as you can probably guess, I am flying!! [he turns so he can show the expanse of grass and building and sky to his no doubt captivated audience. He was more than a little captivated, this was the most fun he'd had...probably ever, but only one thing could make it better.] Cool, right?

Niceties aside, anyone wanna race??

THIRD PERSON:

Outside, the sun was shining, the grounds were glistening green. America's half-finished paper-or 'scroll' as they liked to call it, sat in front of him. About halfway through the page America had given up and it had been filled with tiny cartoon characters of the axis and allies. America, however, wasn't even paying attention to that anymore, completely spellbound by the perfect shade of blue outside the window, fluffy clouds rolling by. That one looked like a bunny taking a bath a bath in the sky, that one looked like a baby, and that one looked like a dildo.

He sighed heavily, looking down at his "essay," if you could even call it that, "I don't even want to write this! It's so nice outside!" The weather was mocking him, looking so nice like that! And then a large crow passed by-it couldn't have been that though, it was too big for that. America's chair rocked back as he stood up, putting his palms flat on his desk and leaning forward against the window pane.

"What is that?" He mouthed against the glass. It went by again; it was a person! Flying! On a broom! Of course! Witches do that, don't they? He knocked hard on the glass, trying to get them to look over at him, but they were too far away. Undeterred, he pulled open the window, homework completely forgotten and leaned out.

“Hey!” he tried. They seemed like they were looking over! “Hey! How do you do that??” He gestured to their broom.

3). Fourthwalling: Yeah, he might do that sometimes too.
4). Canon puncture: No.
5). Offensive subjects (elaborate): I would rather avoid anything too offensive, seeing as I'm already playing from Hetalia. I.E. I don't want a whole lot of really dark history stuff being brought up. I would like to keep it light-hearted.

Yes. He might be a little surprised but he takes it well.
2). Kissing this character: Sure! But depending on the person, you might get a punch in the face!
3). Flirting with this character: He's KY. Have fun with that.
4). Fighting with this character: Sure! But he packs a helluva a punch! (lot of punching going on in this post)
5). Injuring this character (include limits and severity): Yes! Although asking first would be a good idea! (I'm hoping for some hexing matches in magicdrafted!!) But don't go...popping eyeballs or something, eww.
6). Killing this character: Discuss it with me first.
7). Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Ask! And I'll provide his thoughts or anything you need to know!
